2_______:
The colour of the dresses about which you complain is indeed lighter than it should be. Please accept our apologies.
3_______. Alternatively you may keep this lot for sale as seconds at a reduced price of $1,120.
You are perfectly correct in saying that packing and insurance costs are normally less for cargo sent by air. May we remind you, however, that your request to send the goods by air was made at short notice. It was not possible for us to use the lighter air freight packing materials, as most of the dresses were ready for shipment by sea freight.
Furthermore, our insurance is on an open policy at a flat rate, and depends on the value of the goods, not the method of transport. For these reasons our invoice No. 14596 dated 15th Nov., 2000 is still valid, and we look forward to receiving your remittance when due.

In the English legal system a practising lawyer must hold one of two professional qualifications; s/he must either have been admitted to practice as a solicitor or have been called to the Bar as a barrister. This division of the legal profession is of long standing and each branch has its own characteristic functions as well as a separate governing body and professional rules.
The barrister is usually thought of primarily as an advocate, since this is the work in which s/he is most often engaged. Until 1990, s/he had the virtually exclusive right of audience as an advocate before all the superior courts, and s/he can also appear in the inferior courts. When acting professionally, barristers are known as “counsel”. In total there were, in 1991, 6,901 barristers in practice, a number which is just about small enough to make this branch of the profession a closely-knit unit. This point is significant, bearing in mind that the senior judges in the English legal system have, until now, been drawn exclusively from the ranks of experienced counsel.

A man was brought up before a judge and charged with burglary. He had cut a hole in the side of a tent, had put his head, his right arm and his right shoulder through the hole and had stolen several things belonging to the people sleeping in the tent.
The lawyer of the defendant said that as the man had not entered the tent, he couldn’t be convicted of burglary and ought to be set free. The judge however said that while the man as a whole had not committed burglary, his head, his right arm and his right shoulder had.
The jury brought in a verdict of guilty against these parts, which were sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour in the state prison. All the rest of the man was found not guilty and discharged.

A: Bob, do you enjoy painting?
B: Yes, I do.
A: And why do you like it?
B: 1_______, I enjoy painting for many reasons. First of all, I like the colours and the way different artists arrange the paint on the surface.
A: 2_______… As to me, I am interested in some paintings because of the way the artists express some human emotions, such as fear, grief, happiness, or love.
B: You are absolutely right. Even painting of such everyday scenes as people at work or at rest, and of such common objects as food and flowers can be a source of pleasure.
A: And besides, painting also teaches. Some pictures reveal what the artists felt about important events, including death, love, religion, and social justice.
B: I agree with you. And you know that some provide information about the history of the period during which they were created.
A: Yes… about the customs and interests of the people of past societies. By the way, there are different painting styles. Do you know any?
B: 3_______, such as romantism, realism, impressionism and many others.
A: Have you ever visited any picture galleries?
B: Of course. I have been twice to the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow once to the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
A: That’s fine. It was a real pleasure for me to talk with you.

Owing to its beauty the Kremlin was considered to be one of the finest fortresses of its epoch. It impressed all foreigners that came to the capital. However, its secrets were carefully kept, and speaking of the walls of the Moscow “castle” Englishmen said that no foreigner was allowed to have a close look at the walls of the fortress.
Now there are 20 towers in the Moscow Kremlin; the Italian architects – Antonio Fryasin and Pietro Solari – were made responsible for the main work. At the end of the 15th century, the length of the Kremlin wall was more than 2 km.
The oldest Kremlin Tower Tainitskaya (Secret) was built in 1485. It faces the Moscow River and its name is connected with a secret underground passage to the river so that the citizens were not left without water in case of a siege.
