About 4,000 of them come from other countries. In fact, there are currently students from over 130 countries studying there. Every student at Oxford is a member of a “college”. There are 39 main colleges, and each college is in a different part of the town.

No one can seriously pretend to remain unaffected by advertisements.
It is impossible to close your eyes to the pressing offers to buy this or that thing that fill our streets, newspapers and TV programmes. No matter how hard we resist, the advertisements get into our minds and stay there. Though they seem so varied, they have one thing in common: they make strong appeal to our emotions.

When was Stephen King involved in a terrible accident?
Stephen King is a very famous author today but it was not always that way. He had to work hard to become successful, like most writers. Until he began to make money from his writing, he worked in a laundry and then later as a teacher. Although his stories are full of strange characters and terrifying events, at the same time they seem to be very realistic to most readers.
A few years ago, King himself was involved in a terrible accident. He was walking along a country road when he saw a car coming towards him. It was moving dangerously from one side of the road to the other almost as it was no one driving it. In fact, there was a driver but he was drunk. Although King tried as hard as he could to get out of the way, the car hit him. The driver was not hurt but behaved as if he didn’t care at all.
King said later that he felt just like a victim in one of his novels. The man even looked like someone King had once written about. It took Stephen King more than a year to recover from the accident and even things he had always loved doing, like writing, were almost impossible for him.

There are two main types of newspaper: “broadsheets” and “tabloids”. Broadsheets are often larger than tabloids, and are “serious” newspapers. They present the news in detail, and do not have many stories about the private lives of famous people. Tabloids, on the other hand, are much more interested in news and scandals involving stars than they are in serious news. They often have very big headlines, particularly on the front page, and have lots more photographs.

The greenhouse effect is very important; if it didn’t occur at all, the temperature of the planet would be 40 degrees lower and the oceans would freeze. But an increase in the greenhouse effect may lead to global warming with disastrous consequences.
The higher average temperature produced by global warming could cause dramatic changes in the weather. Less rain might fall over large land masses. Central Africa, south Asia and some parts of the United States could risk severe drought and famine. More rain might fall in coastal areas and over the oceans; there might be more storms and hurricanes in the Pacific. A rise in the earth’s average temperature of only one or two degrees would probably melt the polar ace caps and raise sea levels. Sea levels throughout the world are already rising by about two millimeters a year. If the polar ice caps melt, sea levels could rise by more than a meter over a few decades.
