In most countries, you are only allowed to drive a car on a public road if you have a driving licence. You usually have to pass a driving test in order to get the licence. In European countries, this test is in two parts. The first part is a “theory” test. You have to answer questions about road safety. The second part is a “practical” test. You are in a car with an examiner, who tells you where to drive and asks you to do various things, such as parking or reversing around a corner.

What do many girls dream of?
Many girls dream of a career as an ice skater. The costumes and graceful movements make it seem a very romantic thing to do. What’s more, young skaters like Carolina Kostner attract huge numbers of fans when they compete. Nevertheless, ice skating, like most sports, is very demanding and Carolina has to work hard. She spends hours practicing complicated routines and also follows a fitness programme in the gym. Carolina is naturally slim and she doesn’t put on weight but she still has to watch her diet and make sure she eats the right food to get her through her busy schedule. She also needs plenty of sleep. Even after all the celebrations when she wins a competition, Carolina is usually in bed by 9 p.m. She travels with her family so she doesn’t usually feel lonely though she says she sometimes misses being at home with her own things. For Carolina, skating is lots of fun and she enjoys competing against other young skating stars very much.

What is it compulsory for children?
It is compulsory for children to have an education, but you may find it surprising that the teaching doesn’t always have to take place in the school building. As long as they have the necessary paper qualifications, parents themselves can teach their children at home. They may make the decision to do this because they are unhappy with a particular school, or because they feel that they have more knowledge of their own child’s needs than teachers at school. However, there may be critics of parents who make this choice because some people feel that children who are taught at home find it difficult to mix socially with young people of their own age. However, supporters of the idea disagree with this. They think it is a better way of teaching children what is really important.

Research has shown that when they were children, many successful sportspeople were more adventurous than their friends. Why is it so? It seems that some children have very little understanding of the potential risks of doing activities like climbing trees or jumping from heights. They have such faith in their own ability that even when they do make some kind of miscalculation which results in a fall or injury, they do not change their behaviour. Such children continue to ignore or disobey adults who tell them not to do dangerous things and their parents’ disapproval does not seem to make any difference to them. While some insecure children may panic when faced with the possibility of danger, others seem to ignore it and appear to be fearless. These may be the ones who go on to be the sportspeople of tomorrow!

The idea of the Olympic Games absolutely captivated the modern 19th century nationalities.
A Frenchman called Baron de Coubertin may be the famous person behind the actual revival of the modern Olympic Games as we know them today. At the end of the nineteenth century he had an idea to bring the Olympic Games back to life. Following his suggestion, fifteen nations met at an international congress in 1894. Two years later, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens. Since then they have been staged every fourth year, except during World War I and World War II. Perhaps the main difference between the ancient and modern Olympics is that for the ancient Greeks the Games were a way of saluting their gods, when the modern Games are a manner of saluting the athletic talents of people of all nations.
